A Principal’s Tough Love
Posted On 07/23/2009 00:59:48 by inameetingbiz

Principal Steve Perry, founder of Capital Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, firmly believes in attention to details. Students always practice uninformative with their shirts buttoned and tucked in.

Every morning at 7:30 am, he greets each and every student before they enter Capital’s hallways. Good Morning! Good Morning! Where’s your coat? Good Morning! He then proceeds with hallway inspections, a daily routine of tough love, and the highest of expectations of each student. Perry states, “If you don’t want to go to college, don’t go to Capital Prep. Go somewhere else.”

Perry’s approach has produced major results. Capital Preparatory Magnet School with about 300 students in attendances has a 0 percent dropout rate. Very impressive considering Connecticut is ranked as one of the largest achievement gap states in the nation between black and white students.

Perry founded this year-round school with a purpose to create a school that would cater to students from public housing projects.

Holding students and staff to the highest of expectations continues to produce excellence results.
